Debra Lanning • Profile
Throughout her life, images weather on paper, canvas, or wood, have been modes of Lanning’s self expression. Her paintings convey a sense of nature through abstractions. The Horizon series is heavily influenced by her surroundings and experiences. The paintings in this series have an interesting dichotomy between the stylized reality of what we see above the surface and the delicate dance of organic patterns which mischievously lay beneath the surface. These elements combined with Lanning’s strong sense of color create an abstract landscape that is contemporary and inspirational.
Debra Lanning • Statement
Being out on the water has strongly influenced the Horizon series. Water is constantly moving, rolling and bubbling. There is a natural repetition which occurs within the sapphire waters of the earth’s lakes and oceans. This last year has been an inspiring adventure, to capture nature. Losing sight of land, sailing off into the horizon is quite an experience, then coming across to the other side and seeing land appear. Being out on the water where you are able to sit and watch the dawn break, then seeing the vibrant colors shift with the day and end with an explosion of color. It’s just amazing to watch all the light bounce around, reflect and twist. After an adventure it is a pleasure to return to the studio to revisit the horizon, express the experience and create art.
