Judith Tummino • Profile
To capture the essence of a moment before it changes and hold that moment is Judith Tummino's desire in her landscape oil paintings. The softness and simplicity of the images she captures reveal a bittersweet nostalgia for the moment that changes so quickly. "I like direct response from nature. I respond from nature. I respond to painting on location and the direct still-life in front of me." Tummino paints many of her works 'pleinair', or on location, while completing others, mainly larger works, in the studio. She deftly achieves a tonal quality in her work and uses light and shadows to reflect the subtle changes in the landscape.
She loves oil paint for the contrast and texture, and is influenced by the works of the Italian, Morandi, for one, because of the deceptive simplicity.
"I like the fact that what I put down stays without fading, etc."
Judith Tummino • Statement
In my work I attempt to capture the essence of the moment in terms of tonal shapes and planes while seeking to find their relationship to one another in the landscape.
In so doing my work often evolves from the observation of and elimination of detail as I attempt to find the most important elements of the observed phenomenae.
I find that the beauty of the moment becomes evasive, first with the change of light which in turn continuously alters the perceived motif and next with my application of paint which constantly changes the painting on the canvas.
As I work I enjoy the visually tactile elements of both the landscape that I am attempting to hold onto as well as the tonal color of the paint used to capture that landscape.
I find feelings both of anticipation and joy as well as bittersweet nostalgia in being so attuned to the moment that will never be quite the same again, either in the chosen landscape or the resulting painting.
This search leads me on to the next painting wherein a new experience will put me through the same desire to search for the metaphor which reflects an aspect of life so meaningful for me.
