PAUL VARGA • Statement
As a sculptor, I have always felt a closeness and connectedness to the natural materials of the earth. Natural resources like clay, ore and hardwoods are native to northern Michigan. These resources are intrinsic media in my work. It was a natural transition moving from an urban setting to Michigan's north country as these earthen materials are core elements in my sculpture-making process. Landscape and sculpture each incorporate an interplay of positive and negative space. Shape and form change depending upon one's perspective. Whether a sculpture is more abstract or more figurative, the observer should take the time necessary to view it from multiple vantage points to draw their own interpretations and conclusions.
PAUL VARGA • Biography
During my childhood years our family resided in suburbs of Chicago and Detroit. In this impressionable time frame I frequently visited the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Art. I was especially intrigued with the work of the 20th century sculptors. My interests in art were nurtured at Central Michigan University where I received a BA in Art education and an MA in Art, with a concentration in Sculpture.
Since the early 1970's I have balanced the careers of HS art teacher and sculptor. My teaching career included four high schools throughout Michigan from the Detroit area to Marquette county. Currently, I am teaching one class for Kendall College of Art & Design. This adjunct instructor role enables me to continue my passion for helping students while allowing me the time to pursue my sculpture horizons. Recently I was commissioned to create a 9' bronze sculpture that was installed by the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
